To Help Fundraising For New Tower Lights
By JOHN M. DERBY

There are few things in Merced which are
as historically important as the illuminated letters of
the city’s name and other neon lights at the top of
the Merced Theatre tower.
The tower has been a local landmark since
the building was completed in 1932.
This is why, effective immediately, the
Merced County Times will dedicate 10 percent of the proceeds
from all new subscriptions for the next year to help the
Theatre Association finance a new restoration effort.
The cost has been estimated at $40,000,
but as in most bids, there needs to be some room for additional
charges. The Merced Theatre Foundation Board approved replacing
all the neon lighting with LED lighting which is much cheaper.
The Theatre Foundation spearheaded the
drive last weekend by contributing the proceeds from the
Tacos and Tequila Gala held at Dr. Art Kamagar’s house
to go toward the Merced Sign project.
The Times has set a goal of raising at
least $1,000. It will mean that the Merced community will

Our readership has had a steady increase
because people are more interested in their own local community
news, then what is going on in Washington and Sacramento.
That is not to say there is no place for that kind of news.
What we like to point out is the fact that the Merced County

If readers want to start their day with
positive news of their community, then they can rest assured
that the County Times will be jam-packed with news and pictures
of what local people are doing. If Realtors want to send
a copy of a paper to a prospective client who is looking
for a home in Merced County, then the County Times is the
newspaper they can send without fear of scaring their client
to moving somewhere else.
Not only does the County Times support
the local Merced Theatre Foundation on its work, but it
is a big supporter of Playhouse Merced, and local organizations
like Merced Soroptimist International, Rotary, Kiwanis,
Lions, the Hispanic Chamber and the Greater Merced Chamber.
All of these and more are in the weekly
package provided specially for our readers.
